Week #8 Verse and an Update

Ephesians 5:1-2 “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, Just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

When Josh and I got engaged I wanted to make sure that our wedding was based on the Bible and Biblical truths.  This was the verse that we chose to base our wedding on.  We chose this verse because we want to live lives that show Jesus through the way we speak and the way we act.  We know that we are blessed to have been saved by our Savior who gave himself up for us. We chose to memorize this verse at this time as a reminder of the lives we want to display to everyone we meet. And as a reminder that we are only his children because of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

An Update:

Today we got immunized! We got three more shots and started a round of oral medicines. We will have to get one more immunization right before we leave, but it isn’t 100% necessary so basically we could leave tomorrow and be okay!

Many of you have asked and we wanted to let everyone know that our trip is still on.  Harvesters has not experienced any problems due to the recent rioting, so we are scheduled to go as planned on October 14th which is less than 3 weeks away!

We have also raised slightly over $4,000 of the $7,000 that we will need for South Sudan.  We are still praying that God will bring full funding for our trip and we believe he will.

Thank you all for your support!  It’s getting close!

Gail

Week #7 Verse-Ephesians 4:15-16

Ephesians 4:15-16 “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.  From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

Well, it is time for week 7’s verse.  I will admit that it is becoming a bit harder to remember the earlier verses, but from time to time throughout the week Gail and I quiz one another and go through them to keep our memory fresh.

This verse seems very fitting for the past Sunday that we just had.  Here Paul speaks about the unity and the body of Christ working together and building itself up in love.  That is certainly what we experienced from this community that we live in.  Each person here and supporting us in the journey is a supporting ligament.

This is the ultimate desire for Gail and I in this trip.  That each person that reads these posts, supports us through prayer and giving, and interacts with us, will know that it is all about Christ.  He is the head of the Body.  We all serve him for his glory alone.

This verse simply reminds us that we are working together, in many different ways, for Christ alone.

In Christ’s Love,

Josh

Week #6 Vers-Galatians 2:20

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

This verse is an amazing reminder that it is not about me; it is all about Christ.  When accepting Christ as Savior, we also accept him as Lord over our lives.  This means that we are at the mercy of him.  We will do what the master says.  It makes me think about a ship and it’s captain.  The ship-mates all follow the captains orders, whatever they may be.  They do not have time to stop and question the captain, sit down, and have a discussion.  When the sail needs to be hoisted, it needs to be hoisted immediately.

However, there are times that we forget about his Lordship over our lives and we want to stop, sit, and discuss all of the details with him to make sure that it actually is in our best interest.  That is one reason we chose to memorize this verse.  It is a reminder that we have died to our selves.  We have forfeited the ability to choose for ourselves.  We are no longer in the driver’s seat.

Everything that we do is out of faith in the Son of God.  Why?  For a couple of reasons.  First, he loved us enough to give himself up for us.  He took the ultimate punishment so that we do not have to bear what we deserve but instead get to enjoy the blessings and relationship with God the Father.  Secondly, he was, is, and will always be perfect.  If there is anyone I want to be in control of my life it is one that cannot make a wrong decision.  Certainly we can and do mess up and have faults.  Jesus does not.  All of his decisions are perfect.  So, yes, I will let him call the shots.

As Gail and I seek to live out this verse daily, we pray that you will join us in this.  Please die…die to yourself so that you can experience true life.

A small update on our travel:  We have hit the halfway point for funds raised!  This is exciting and we certainly know that God is working in and through others, maybe even you, and pulling us together as the body of Christ to do his perfect will.  Thank you again for partnering with us.  Also, please do not forget about the Sunday service this coming Sunday if you are in these parts.

In Christ’s Love,

Josh

Week #5 Verse-Colossian 1:16

Colossians 1:16 “For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”

Hi – Gail here. I am not quite as eloquent a writer as my husband has turned out to be, but since I did not have to work today I wanted to chime in on our memory verses.  I am proud to say that I have memorized the past four verses, and if you asked me I could tell them to you.  I really believe that committing these verses to memory is a special way for us to prepare for our upcoming month in South Sudan.

The verse this week is an awesome reminder of the power of the God we serve.  Josh and I have chosen to turn over our entire lives to God and it is encouraging to know that he was the one who created them in the first place.  It is an honor to know that he is using us to do his work, even though he in no way needs us.

But to me the most moving part of this verse is actually the last two words: “for him.”  Heaven and earth were not created on a whim, but were created with a purpose for the God that we serve.  We, Josh, me, you, were created with a purpose – to serve and do the will of God. You might be asking what is the will of God? “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40  Love God, Love Others. This is why we were created. To show the love of God is why the Sun,  the Wind, the Oceans, the Animals were created. The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.” Psalm 24:1-2

I pray that we will be worthy of serving so powerful a creator.

Thank you all for your own going support.
